March 2021

  • At some point in March, LBP Union converts from a clanning alliance to a LBP fan-community.
  • On 6th March, Twitter users noticed that the LittleBigPlanet servers were experiencing some issues, A user known as m88youngling attempted to log onto LittleBigPlanet 2 to host a mech battle tournament match when he was unable to access my Earth, Community page, and any published levels. However, He was still able to play with other people on his friends list. Many users were seeing the pop up: "A problem occurred when attempting to connect to the LittleBigPlanet servers (403)."
  • From 6th March to 11th March, the servers experienced a DoS attack. An individual utilized a publicly released script that exploited an unused feature in LittleBigPlanet HUB. This script falsely signaled to the server that an exceptionally large number of slots (999,999) had been purchased for publishing, allowing for the attempted publication of thousands of levels per second. Although this didn't necessarily cause the server's CPU to reach 100%, it effectively overwhelmed the server's capacity, rendering it unresponsive to other requests. As a result, players were unable to access online features, experiencing extended loading screens during this time. Following this, the server underwent a series of disruptions, characterized by intermittent shutdowns and restarts, as developers engaged in a game of cat and mouse with the attacker. While the issue with level publishing was addressed, subsequent attempts were made to exploit other server functions, such as spamming pictures and high scores. To mitigate these attacks, developers implemented rate limits on all write operations. However, the attacker found another vulnerability, exploiting a text search function with an excessive number of levels in the query (999,999,999), leading to another form of DoS attack. In response, developers expanded the rate limits to include all read operations, thereby safeguarding the server from further exploitation.
